Speak to your new or prospective neighbours to find out their experience of living in the area. They can advise on whether the crime rate has been getting worse or better.

NEW DOORS AND WINDOWS
If the Windows and Doors on your new property look old and insecure then it would be worth getting them replaced.
Ensure they are certified to enhanced security standards. Not only will they keep the burglars out, they will keep the heat in.
